Demolition Derby, Werder-Style
By: Jamie | November 23rd, 2009
Alternate title: No Frings? No Pizarro? No Borowski? No problem!
Yes, indeed, Werder Bremen went to Freiburg and Freiburg did not emerge unscathed. 6-0 to the Green-Whites in what some media outlets have called “sparkling,” “brilliant” and particularly take note of another masterclass from Mesut Özil (hereafter known as “the Wizard of Öz” thanks to a commenter on The Guardian). According to the Werder website, the Wizard of Öz now has 8 assists in the Bundesliga and 6 goals. He has 14 assists total already this season in all competitions.
Another hearty “welcome back” to Hugo Almeida, who took away our Pizarro injury woes by snagging a brace. Marko Marin’s absolutely superb freekick curled beautifully into the back of the net with the Freiburg keeper rooted to the spot. Özil grabbed the fourth goal after an excellent breakaway. Naldo scored from the penalty spot in the absence of our usual penalty-taker Captain Frings. Even Markus Rosenberg got on the scoresheet!

That put Werder at the top of the league through Saturday night to Sunday morning and the final whistle of the Bayer Leverkusen match. We’re back down to second but keeping the pressure on Leverkusen. Can we keep it up? It is looking that way, but we’ve got a tough fixture list coming up, including trips to Wolfsburg and Schalke and hosting Hamburg toward the end of December.
No Europa League football this week, so the lads should have plenty of time to prepare for defending champions Wolfsburg next weekend. Wolfsburg may be in a bad mood after losing to Nuremberg this weekend, plus they have a Champions League match this week. Perhaps we can take advantage of a tired Wolfsburg side. Ah, who am I kidding, it’s not going to be an easy match no matter what. But we should be in the right frame of mind now; we have the confidence to come away with three points. Let’s hope we do it.

Ha, welcome back. Yeah, the international week is indeed infinitely long. So only 1 point from the top – things are looking good.
If we can maintain our excellent form, I see no reason why we cannot steamroll Wolfsburg. Here’s to a Bremen romp.
