Poll: Can Werder Avoid the Drop?
By: Jamie | February 23rd, 2011Wow. It’s been a miserable time to be watching Werder Bremen. Every time we think it can’t get any worse… it does. One thing that I can count on is seeing the Werder fans singing, week in and week out, despite the terrible performances. But even they have their limits – as they confronted the team bus after the 4-0 defeat to rivals Hamburg.

Around 250 Werder fans took it upon themselves to get answers to the problems at the club in a peaceful confrontation and dialogue with the players. It didn’t turn into a full-scale riot, so perhaps something came out of it. Maybe the fans were satisfied with the answers they received, even if they aren’t satisfied with the on-pitch performances.
Despite the poor results and the easy placing of blame on the manager, fans still seem to support Schaaf. The man has been in charge at Werder for over a decade. Players have come and gone, Schaaf has remained. Allofs has declared his support for the coach as well – basically, his argument is “well, who else would we get to take his place?” At least we’re not willing to participate in the ridiculous game of managerial musical chairs that keeps going on in the league.
But really, how much worse can this get? We are lingering dangerously just above the relegation zone. Per Mertesacker has fallen to pieces. Aaron Hunt and Marko Marin have become ineffective. What did we buy Avdic for, when Schaaf seems to prefer the inefficient Wagner?
Can Werder avoid the drop?

As much as our teams are rivals, I would really hate to see Werder Bremen get relegated. It doesn’t seem right for the big, storied teams to not be in the top flight, and we would miss two of the most exciting games of the year with no Werder-HSV derbies.
Even if they do get relegated, it will probably only be for one year (look at Hertha Berlin right now), but imagine the mass exodus of star players that would happen. Mertesacker, Marin, Pizarro, Naldo, Hunt…I can’t imagine these guys would be content to play in the 2. Bundesliga. But who knows, maybe some big personnel changes could fix the problem?
I also feel kind of sorry for Thomas Schaaf since this club has pretty much been his whole life as far as I know. But maybe it’s time for him to move into a back room role with the club so they can find a new coach. Maybe you guys can take Armin Veh off of us??? Ha ha, just a thought.
Good luck for the rest of the season!

Hey guys,
Bayern fan here. I would hate to see you guys relegated. Werder’s defence always had a poor reputation. But this season, it has gone from bad to worse. Allofs recently came out and said that even Schaaf isn’t ‘untouchable’. I hope he keeps Schaaf though.

I’ve gone ahead and bookmarked http://bremen.theoffside.com/opinion/poll-can-werder-avoid-the-drop.html at Digg.com so my friends can see it too. I simply used Poll: Can Werder Avoid the Drop? – The Offside – Werder Bremen blog as the entry title in my Digg.com bookmark, as I figured if it is good enough for you to title your blog post that, then you probably would like to see it bookmarked the same way.
