Brief preview of Werder 2007/08
By: Arian | October 11th, 2007
Firstly, let me say that the last season was solid. I’m saying solid because we could have done better. There were couple of mistakes that cost us the title. Anyway, third place ain’t such a bad position to end up in a league that is full of strong teams. Here are the top 5 teams:
1. Stuttgart 70 pt
2. Schalke 04 68 pt
3. Werder 66 pt
4. Bayern M 60 pt
5. Bayer L 51 pt
Well the final standings are justified. Bayer were nothing special. Bayern disappointed (however, they were weakened a lot, mainly by the departure of Ballack). We played ok even though we could have played slightly better. Schalke played good except for their most important game of the season. Stuttgart had luck. A lot of it.
So back to Werder.
Thomas Schaaf had a big problem during the summer. He had a task to find a replacement for the guy who was one of the best players that had ever played in Werder. A guy who was best last season alongside with Diego. A guy that shouldn’t have left us over Bayern. Miroslav Klose. Two strikers were brought into the squad and they were ought to fill the gap that was created with Klose’s departure.
* Both seem good. After 13 games in this season, Sanogo is the top scorer of the team with 8 scored goals (6 in the Bundesliga and 2 in the Champions League). Hugo Almeida is sharing the second place with Diego. Both scored 6 goals (4 in Bundesliga, 2 in Champions League).
A third striker was also brought. His name is John Jairo Mosquera (joined from SV Wacker Burghausen). He’s only 19 and I doubt he’ll get a lot of playing time. But he’s 1,92 and I heard he’s a good header. So we have to be optimistic. Another good news: Klasnic recovered from the operation and the doctors announced he’s ready to resume training. So we don’t have to worry that much about our attacking line right now.
Other notable signing is Carlos Alberto. He’s a midfielder. A good and young one, coming from Corinthians (he’s 22). I reckon he’ll get to start whenever Torsten or Diego are tired or injured.
These were the main signings that should make the difference this season. Thirteen games so far and they looked great. They were brought to help to win titles and it seems they’ve taken their job seriously. Let’s hope their form continues like this.
There were other minor signings also…
Transfers in:
Boubacar Sanogo (Hamburger SV)
John Jairo Mosquera (SV Wacker Burghausen)
Leon Andreasen (1.FSV Mainz 05)
Kevin Schindler (Werder Bremen U19)
Kevin Artmann (Werder Bremen II)
Hugo Almeida (FC Porto)
Nico-Stephano Pellatz (Hertha BSC)
Martin Harnik (Werder Bremen II)
Carlos Alberto (Corinthians)
Dusko Tosic (Sochaux)
Sebastian Boenisch (FC Schalke 04)
Transfers out:
Andreas Reinke (Retired)
Kasper Jensen (FC Carl Zeiss Jena)
Jérôme Polenz (Alemannia Aachen)
Miroslav Klose (FC Bayern München)
Florian Mohr (Werder Bremen II)
Francis Banecki (Werder Bremen II)
Christian Schulz (Hannover 96)
Total value of players bought : 20.600.000 Euros
Total value of players sold : 14.710.000 Euros
This season our biggest enemy were (and still are) injuries. There were games that we played with half of the first team in hospital. But things are getting better now.
And one last thing…
Do you want to see how sex looks like on a football field?
(sorry… I just had to.)

Welcome to the Offside team. I look forward to reading your columns.
I think, CL aside, the first part of the season has been highly successful for Bremen. Still not sold on Almeida or Rosenborg, but am loving Sanogo and Harnik. But they still seem to be getting past Klose. Metsacker/Naldo is one of the best young pairings in CD anywhere. Also think Jensen has been the biggest story as he has played so well that some old stalwarts shouldn’t have guaranteed places any longer. And if we have learned anything this season, it’s that a new #2 in the sticks has to be obtained yesterday

Klasnic had a kidney failure in January 2007. He had 2 transplants because his body didn’t accept the kidney the first time. From January till now, he didn’t have trainings.
And now he has been given permission by doctors to start again.

they’re my team of choice when it comes to FIFA 07/08
what do you think of hugo almeida?
i cant follow the bundesliga so i cant watch him play, but im interested to know about his form b/c he is portuguese and we could really use a striker from the “german school” in the national team

Well Hugo Almeida is a technical forward and has a great pace. He’s confident with the ball and knows how to use it. He was one of the key players in Porto in 2005/06 season when they became champions of Portugal. Which is more interesting, he’s only 23. So there should be a lot of great things coming from him in the future.
