AC Milan withstands Werder attacks
By: Jackson | February 18th, 2009
Looking to turn the poor run of late, Werder went on the attack for goals but could only score once as they played to a 1-1 draw against AC Milan at Weserstadion.
From the opening minute when Diego’s corner found a wide open Alexis Tziolis unable to score from close range, the Green-Whiltes were constantly on the doorstep but could not finish. Continuing to attack Hugo Almeida’s header was off by a fraction a few minutes later and it seemed Werder would be unable to get a break. After squandering a number of opportunities the visitors took the lead with nine minutes remaining in the half when Mathieu Flamini crossed to Filippo Inzaghi who beat Tim Wiese for the 1-0 lead.
At the restart Hugo Almeida and Diego went close three times before the hour but still had nothing to show for their efforts. However the draw was salvaged six minutes before time when Daniel Jensen’s long ball was headed-on by Hugo Almeida to Diego, who controlled the ball with his chest and struck it past Dida from close range to make it 1-1. Looking for the win, Bremen nearly found it before the end when Massimo Ambrosini’s heading clearance struck the AC crossbar but it went clear and the exciting match ended with a 1-1 draw.
Energie Cottbus on Saturday and hopefully this match was just the start of seeing the return of the Green Whites potent attack.

We so deserved to win this match, two misses in the opening five minutes and a lucky goal for Milan (I wonder who Fritz saw in the stands). But still, a positive step forward which will perhaps be followed by some victories in the league.
If only I had managed to get tickets to this match …Posted from

Watching this game there was no doubt again what a fantastic player Diego is. His work rate was out of this world and everything ran through him. Can’t express how much I enjoyed watching him. Also thought Ameida and Pizzaro gave the Milan a lot to handle, especially with their strength in the air.
Downside was Tziolis who missed a sitter and then insisted on shooting from 30 yards out in order to make up for his aweful miss, and the flank play. That was brutal and I can not recall more than 2 decent crosses into the box from the wing. With two arial threats in Ameida and Pizzaro that is criminal.
Can’t see Werder winning though in Milan. It took Werder so much work and effort just to get one goal and very little for AC to get one and hit the post. Though Frings will be back, so will Pato who right now is in a frightening form.

I’m rooting for Bremen this year in the UEFA CUp. Rightly so, it will be an uphill fight the whole way considering they need to win on aggregate.
