Beşiktaş hands Werder another defeat
By: Jackson | January 17th, 2009
Beşiktaş handed Werder another defeat in training camp friendlies as they fell 2-1. While losing a friendly is not a concern on its one, three consecutive losses is not the foundation of a club that was in the Champions League. Thomas Schaaf has been tinkering with the Green Whites lineup but quite obviously there is still a long way to go.
After the match which saw them give up two unanswered goals after the break to lose, the manager said:
“We really should be mad at ourselves, because today we played our best game. There was more to be had. We wanted to play more active football, connect better on our passing and play more confidently. And we saw many of those elements. But on the other hand, it was not enough to bring home the victory. We didn’t finish off the game. We did not have enough energy in the end. But we should have held on for at least a 1-1 draw.”
“This loss is aggravating especially because of the opportunities we had. We had a number of chances but could not use them to build a larger advantage to take into the final stages.”
“We should have stopped the opponent on the outside. But we were not active enough, were a bit too dutiful and just kind of ran with them. And then the attacker is allowed to shoot. That is exactly what we had talked about in the last few days.”
As a final point he mentioned discipline when calls don’t go there way:
“A big compliment. The fact that everyone remained reserved even though there were some very questionable decisions was a very big achievement.”
With match behind them the club returned home and after a few days off will return to practice on Monday. It’s hard to evaluate a training camp when they continuously lose friendlies and the mood is definitely not celebratory. The return home for the club will be good though and be a better gauge of where they are at.

It seems to me these guys don’t have fire in their bellies. The team and the new acquisitions seem to be made of one mold – mild-mannered, restrained types. While this may be a good attribute in private life, in the game you need some passion and fighting spirits. Baumann, as the team captain, does not seem to be the guy who can fire the team and let loose the “gods of war”. They need somebody new in there with passion.
