Europa League Preview: Werder vs. Nacional

By: Jamie | September 16th, 2009

Tomorrow Werder head to Portugal to take on Nacional in their first match of the new Europa League campaign. Considering we were the runners-up last season, I think we head in to the match expected to win.

Nacional are currently 13th in the Portuguese Liga. They beat Zenit to reach the group stages of the Europa League. And I guess every other football fan besides me recognizes Nacional as Cristiano Ronaldo’s former club.

One potential problem: Mesut Özil has a knee problem and may not play. Losing our important playmaker is of course not ideal at any point in any competition. Hopefully he will be recovered for the match, but if not, I don’t think it will be worth it to risk him. We may lose Özil, but it looks like Markus Rosenberg will be back in the roster.

    @Luka – C. Ronaldo was a youth player at Nacional from 1995-97.

    Thanks, Rahul, that is what I meant. I guess I should have clarified it was one of Ronaldo’s clubs as a youth player. Nacional seem to take a lot of pride in being part of his development.

    Oh, didn’t know that! Cheers guys. I didn’t intend to come across as rude or anything.

    Not a problem, Luka! I try to pay little attention to Ronaldo so I wouldn’t be surprised if I got something about his history as a player wrong ;)

    Oh yeah, no need to pay attention to C. Ronaldo – I still don’t like calling him Ronaldo – the original was so much better.
