Green-Whites earn a tough draw
By: Jackson | October 22nd, 2008
In a tumultuous battle the Green-Whites fought back in Athens to earn a 2-2 draw against Panathinaikos.
Per Mertesacker put Werder Bremen in front 1-0 a minute shy of the half hour mark when a Mesut Özil free kick saw him unmarked behind the Greek defense and immediately slammed it behind goalkeeper Alexandros Tzorvas. Without bias it was pretty clear that the volley was controlled off Per’s arm and should have been called-back however chalk another missed call in important Football matches. However behind the scenes and relatively quietly a minute before <Markus Rosenberg was brought in for Claudio Pizarro, thus nullifying a key aspect of the Green-Whites attack.
However whether Henk Ten Cate used that missed call as a rallying cry for his forces or the home crowds support pushed them on, Panathinaikos was immediately pushing Werder backwards. On the surface it looked like Bremen was slowing the match down but either way it wasn’t an effective approach. With roughly fourteen minutes left before the half, Evagelos Mantzios flicked on a <span Gabriel cross and the Greek squad’s confidence noticeably soared.
The match continued as mostly a box-to-box dalliance until the Evagelos Mantzios scored his second of the night with twenty-two minutes remaining. With Austria’s Andreas Ivanschitz swinging in the corner, Loukas Vintra headed the ball past Christian Vander but as it approached the line, Mesut Özil cleared it off with what I can best describe as something you’d try in a game of “keep-uppy”. With the ball flicked out, most of the home squad was looking towards the referee that the goal had passed the line. However with ball looping out of the box, Evagelos Mantzios rose up and headed a long slow ball that cleared over the finger-tips of the outstretched ‘keeper. Dimitrios Salpingidis nearly put the match out of reach five minutes later as his drive pounded off the crossbar. However at that point Werder Bremen slowly woke up and began to attack more. With seven minutes remaining they were rewarded as Mesut Özil swung in a perfect cross that Hugo Almeida headed-in and saved the night for the Green-Whites.
Much can be said of this match from the Green-Whites perspective from the loss of Claudio Pizarro early and sub-par performances by Diego and Torsten Frings. While it is unlikely to be mentioned anywhere, the club headed to Athens a day early to avoid possible travel disruption due to labour disruption in Greece and I can’t help but wonder how did that impact performance. Performance on the pitch certainly had a “dull tarnish” to it, as if tired and ill-prepared. In the end, with a great chance to sink their competition and go a long way in advancing to the knockout stage, they fell short. With three draws in three Champions League matches they’ll need to defeat Anorthosis in Cyprus later this month if they are to advance.

They’ve had great attacking form in the league — I think Werder can turn it around.

I don’t think arriving a day early in Athens had any impact. Had Bremen played a great match, some would probably have argued that the fact that Bremen arrived early and got used to the Athens smog helped the team to a great performance.
I was really disappointed by Bremen. Most of their exciting attacking game wasn’t there and instead got replaced by a cheap impression of a stereotypical English long ball game with a 5% chance of such a long ball finding a Werder player. The more cautious approach didn’t seem to help Bremen’s defence either and Vander is not a good backup keeper.
Though, 0-0, then 1-1 and now 2-2. There is a certain progress in Bremen’s Champions League campaign.
I hope they get their act together and get out of one of their easiest Champions League groups in a while and then start fixing some positions in the squad in the winter.

It was a disappointing match and they didn’t look focused. Whether that was because of arriving in Athens early and not being focused on the match is something we won’t find out easily. However they lost an easy chance to get closer to advancing.
Jan – my issue of arriving early wasn’t air quality but having too much free time in Athens, not being in prep work and ending up sluggish.

Common Werder it’s a relatively easy group if we don’t go through it would be pathetic

I wasn’t serious when I referred to the smog. For me “one day earlier or later” arguments just always involve a lot of speculation. Stuttgart had an UEFA Cup match on Thursday and had to play Bremen on a Saturday. If Stuttgart had lost the match, some people would have surely argued, that they hadn’t enough time to regenerate… But Stuttgart actually won so there was no need for such an excuse.
Not that I discard your theory completely. But I don’t think it works as a sole explanation for Bremen’s performance.
