Green-Whites head to UEFA Cup

By: Jackson | December 9th, 2008

The Green Whites advance to the UEFA Cup on the avails of a 2-1 victory over Serie A giants Inter Milan at Weserstadion.

Werder definitely had something to prove after the disappointing weekend loss against KSC and showed significant ambition in the first half but were unable to break through till after the break. Finally, three minutes past the hour Mesut Özil’s drive was saved by Inter ‘keeper Julio César but the rebound came to Claudio Pizarro who drilled the ball into the net. Nine minutes from time Markus Rosenberg doubled the margin as he capitalized on poor defending. Inter was not done and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who had entered the match at the break for a inconsequential Adriano found the back of the net from twenty-three minutes out with two minutes remaining. However the match concluded without further scoring and Werder gleefully took the 2-1 victory.

The Bundesliga will have ample participation in the UEFA Cup as the Green Whites will join HSV and Wolfsburg who have already guaranteed a spot and possibly Hertha BSC, VfB and Schalke who wait final deciding matches.

That was a treat. I don’t know the story on Diego’s (and Naldo’s) absence but Ozil sure filled the void. I didn’t get to see last weekend’s game but what a difference from the loss to Hamburg with both of them! I’m not sure if Inter was content to sit back and play the special one’s game or what but they certainly seemed to care if Quaresma’s tackle was any indication… Wiese deserves props for a good first half stop, too…but otherwise wasn’t tested much (Zlatan’s was just perfect and he was given too much space then Bolateli’s (sp?) header was so far off). It’s a nice consolation but shows higher expectations were reasonable…

Incredible difference wasn’t it. I sense some big changes during the break as well and yes, it is disappointing not advancing but I am hopeful Hertha BSC, VfB and Schalke get in the UEFA as well.

Can I ask your opinion on this. I edited it out of my review as I did not feel it was noteworthy but what do you think of Quaresma? He looks like his entire attacking threat is gone.

Congrats to the Green-whites, I’m glad they made it. Looks like Germany may be ruling the UEFA Cup this year.
