Green-Whites slide continues against Bayer Leverkusen
By: Jackson | October 28th, 2008The Green Whites will be pleased to see October end as the month was an absolute disaster. Coupled with the 2-0 loss to Bayer Leverkusen, they were only able to earn two points in four matches and have crashed to tenth in the table.
Today’s loss will not be any easier because of the clubs injury problems as they allowed two goals in the final nineteen minutes. In the attacking-end excluding Torsten Frings, Mesut Özil and Hugo Almeida’s early chances the offense was lacking intensity and confidence without Diego and Claudio Pizarro and was more inclined to wait for a counter-attack. With nineteen minutes remaining a Patrick Helmes header was saved by Christian Vander but Arturo Vidal snapped-up the rebound and didn’t hesitate making it 1-0. With ten minutes remaining Stefan Kießling’s shot cracked off the post and came to Manuel Friedrich, who then drove the ball into the net and made it 2-0.
After the match Thomas Schaaf, in response to questions of championships:
“We must work now on playing better again.”
With a tough match coming up this weekend against Hertha Berlin he added:
“My thoughts are absolutely directed toward the portion against Hertha BSC.”

I watched this match last evening and Bremen just looked out of synch. Not like Leverkusen was playing stellar defense, either. Bayer were very good on the counter. Not sure what’s wrong with them right now. . .

It’s tough when some of your main players are out with injury, but this should be the time for the other guys to step up. Perhaps they’ll improve with more practice together.

I took a quick look at some other European leagues. The only team coming close to Bremen’s 22 conceded goals is newly promoted Sporting Gijon in Spain with 21 conceded goals (which included six by Barca and seven by Real).
Naldo and Mertesacker are not in form and newly signed Prödl isn’t good enough (yet) to put any pressure on either of the two, or even replace one of them.
Baumann is getting old – in fact he is old.
Fritz is out of form but a solid rightback otherwise. Yet, there’s no quality backup for him.
Boenisch and Pasanen aren’t really leftbacks worthy of a title or at least Champions League spot contender. Boenisch is young and might still improve, but he isn’t there yet.
Things should look better, when players like Mertesacker and Fritz find their form again, but overall i would say that Werder is simply lacking quality at the back compared to direct competitors…

It is easier than that because they have a cancer of not playing tough Football and getting pushed around. Husejinović, Tošić and Prödl might not be ready but they not would allow you to go straight up the gut either or poach rebounds. Crash the box in my back-line and you will remember it.

Does anyone else think maybe Jogi is onto something by replacing Frings but, unlike Schaaf, has the foresight (and the players) to make changes?
Baumann is certainly getting on, Frings is not on form, yet we don’t have suitable back-up. Would be great right about now to still have Rolfes, no?
Anyone agree that a new 6 should be looked for sooner, rather than later?Posted from
