Green Whites win first of Rückrunde

By: Jackson | March 15th, 2009

Seemingly waking from hibernation the Green Whites laid out their best performance of the year defeating Stuttgart 4-0. The victory was the first in the second half of the season for Thomas Schaaf and company and brings Werder to within two points of Dortmund. With Mesut Özil back in the lineup and Markus Rosenberg starting up-top in place of Hugo Almeida, 40,000 supporters at Weser-Stadion were treated to a flourishing confident display that hasn’t been seen in quite sometime.

After a series of missed chances, Diego took it upon himself with eleven minutes remaining in the half as struck the back of the net off a free-kick from twenty-five metres. The flood gates were opened after the break as Diego set up two more goals before the hours. Eight minutes after the break the Brazilian provided Claudio Pizzaro a well-weighted through ball which he then sent in from twenty-two metres. Six minute later his work was key in providing Markus Rosenberg the ball and the Swedish international drilled the ball into the net. Rosenberg’s day wasn’t complete though as with sixteen minutes remaining he accepted Alexandros Tziolis’ provision and sent the ball past Jens Lehmann to make it 4-0.

The Green Whites get back to action in the second leg of the UEFA Cup against Saint-Étienne on Wednesday.
