Groundhog Day

By: Jackson | January 28th, 2009

Citing the repeat of last years match against Borussia Dortmund, Per Mertesacker referred to today’s DFB Pokal match against the same foe as in the movie; “A case of ‘Groundhog’s Day.”

He added (without any references to Bill Murray):

“We were really strong back then especially in the first half and had three or four good chances which we didn’t use. Getting eliminating like that was very bitter. We have a score to be settled with Dortmund and definitely want to win this time around. But to do that we will have to play just like we did last time – only use our opportunities more consequently.”

It is no secret that the Green Whites have been floundering of late and need to find their shooting boots against a tough defensive unit. Diego and Claudio Pizarro are available for the match as their suspensions do not apply but Thomas Schaaf is without Naldo, Aaron Hunt and Daniel Jensen to injuries.

This is an important match in many aspects, not only to stem the tide of a faltering side but the DFB Pokal is important but then again I think that is Lost in Translation.

Have anybody seen the game / know more details? I have been just following a web commentary, and it looked like Werder was dominating – the position was 71% for Werder. However, there were only 2 goals, second one in the 80th minute, so maybe it was not so one-sided.
