Klaus Allofs – “there was no fightback”
By: Jackson | November 6th, 2008Speaking through the Bundesliga website, Werder director Klaus Allofs expressed his anger at the Panathinaikos defeat at home with some very pointed words.
“Certain players have to ask themselves what’s going on inside their heads at the moment. You can’t throw away a game as easily as that. Our fans actually showed a lot of patience. After a performance like that, they deserve an apology. It was simply not up to international standard – it wasn’t Werder Bremen!”
“I’ve watched games where we’ve struggled, but I can never remember us going out with such a whimper. There was no fightback of any description, and that’s the worst thing you can accuse a sportsman of. The potential is there, but quality depends on what you make of it. ”
“In the short term we’ll continue to work on our areas of weakness. But for the middle- and long-term, we’re going to have give a lot of thought to whether we have the right mix for success here. If the players aren’t able to take certain things on board in the very near future, we’re going to have to part ways with some of them.”
Finally when asked of Thomas Schaaf he responded:
“I see no grounds for questioning the work of the coach. I know how Thomas works and I have every confidence in him.”

I think the absence of Frings really hurt Werder Bremen, and allowed Panathnaikos to pose more of a dominant threat throughout the match.
The match must have been a deja vu for Bremen fans, as the result was very similar to Olympiacos’ visit to the Weserstadion from last year.
