Poll: Should Werder cash in on Özil?

By: Jamie | July 12th, 2010

The fact that Özil has claimed he wants to fulfill his contract with Werder will undoubtedly bring massive debate amongst fans. And everybody likes to click buttons on the internet, so have a go!

The arguments:

Werder could of course go ahead and take advantage of the massive interest generated in our Number 11 at the World Cup by pocketing a rather large sum of cash and using it to help find a replacement in midfield or a new full-back.

Or, we could keep Özil for at least another year, try to make a good run in the Champions League and Bundesliga and hope he decides to extend his contract (though I doubt he will). By doing that, though, we run the risk of him leaving on a free at the end of the 2010/11 season.

Özil leaving on a free wouldn’t be the end of the world. Werder don’t need the money to help pay off any debts and Schaaf generally does not buy any superstar players; we prefer to grow or develop them ourselves. The new gap in our midfield could potentially be filled by the promising Marko Marin. But would the lure of many millions be too much for the fans to resist?

Or, of course, this could all be a negotiating ploy to get Barcelona, Chelsea, etc. to throw even more money at the club so we can really take advantage of the interest in our Mesut!

But now, we have a friendly starting in about five minutes, so I am off to watch that.

The trouble is, that if you don’t sell him, then it’s a constant spotlight on what’s happening with negotiations–and there will be enough pressure on Özil to lead the team already. Ballack was in a similar situation in 2005, and actually responded well on the field at least-his last season at Bayern was probably his best. But, he was already German captain and 29–so much more prepared to handle it all.

I would think that it might be better for the Bundesliga if Ozil stays another year, especially if Bremen can get their act together and actually find a way to get out of the Champions League group phase for once in its life!I don’t think selling him right now is in the best interest of the team or the League.

@ Luke – Özil was under pressure this past season already, what with Diego leaving a huge gap in our midfield and the constant discussions regarding his contract. I feel like he’s coped with pressure well already – he was fantastic at the U21 Euros, had a great season with Werder, and fulfilled expectations at the World Cup (okay, maybe only the expectations of anyone who watches the Bundesliga but still!). I don’t think his knowing this might be his last season would keep him from working hard for the team.

I tend to agree with Ed. I’d, of course, like for him to stay. But Werder aren’t going to hold him against his wishes. If he wants to go, we would let him go.

I’m actually pretty intrigued that the poll results are as close as they are.

I agree that keeping Özil is in the interest of the league, as the Bundesliga surely wants to benefit from Germany’s positive World Cup performance. But is it in the best interest of Werder?

Werder want to extend his contract, but Özil keeps Werder waiting and has recently said, that he would be willing to talk about a contract extension, but only in time for the winter break. At this point he’ll receive dozens of offers from other clubs who want him on a free transfer. I doubt that Werder would have any chance then. Either they can extend the contract this summer – maybe via a generous increase in wages + participation in his eventual transfer fee; as they did in Diego’s case – or they have to sell him.

Werder can’t afford to just lose their most valuable assets. But they shouldn’t let him go for cheap either of course. Since Özil can make a difference in the CL and the Bundesliga, Werder should at least get one CL group phase worth of money – i.e. €20m+.

Are any of you aware of whether you can get streaming video through the Werder website that’s in English? I’ve visited there but only certain pages are available in English.

As for Ozil, I think Bremen should probably cash in but I haven’t kept up on transfers this offseason.

I hope he stays. I mean if Werder can have some sort of consistency in finishing top 3 or 4 in the league every year (which they should be able to) wouldn’t they be considered a big enough team to actually keep a star player? It still seems the Bundesliga (Bayern excepted) is a farm system for the “bigger” leagues. Given the potential for growth in the next couple years in Germany and the debt that continues to pile up in other leagues across Europe it’d be nice to stars to start moving to German clubs and those that are here remaining here.
