Transfer Window Closes – Crickets Chirp in Bremen
By: Jamie | September 1st, 2009Yes, the silly season has ended for now, and, as expected, the Green-Whites had no last-minute transfer news to speak of. Although yesterday there were odd rumblings of Miroslav Klose on his way to either Werder or Stuttgart but they died down pretty quickly and obviously nothing became of the rumors.

And now it’s time for internationals – three of the boys are on duty for Germany: Marin, Özil and Mertesacker. Apparently Özil sat out training today with a knee injury, but should be available for the friendly on Saturday against South Africa.
Tim Wiese wasn’t called up, which has garnered criticism from Thomas Schaaf, which I don’t quite understand because there was a report where Wiese specifically asked NOT to be called up (and for pretty ridiculous reasons, I am sorry to say… okay, I can understand not wanting to be jeered but it IS part of the job. Not everyone is going to love you!). Per is pretty much guaranteed his spot in defense as long as he can remain injury-free. Although Marko and Mesut have been doing well for Werder, I highly doubt Jogi will give them much more than brief sub appearances toward the end of each match.

Outside of the German senior squad, there are a few more boys out on international duty. Philipp Bargfrede, given a start last weekend against Hertha Berlin, has been called up to the German U21 squad. Pasanen is on duty with Finland for their World Cup qualifiers (and I would love to see them make it, but I don’t think they will surpass Russia or Deutschland), and Moreno joins the Bolivian squad.
A lot of club fans absolutely hate the international break because it’s a chance for players to get injured and miss important Bundesliga/Europa League/Pokal action. While I understand that, I personally love international action because it’s what helped me get into the sport! But that doesn’t mean I’m not worried for the players… let’s just hope the Werder lads can all keep fit and uninjured.
