“we will be working tirelessly to that end”

By: Jackson | December 9th, 2008

The Green Whites have one last chance to make it through to the UEFA Cup as Inter Milan comes to Weserstadion. Sitting in last place of Group B, the Champions League has been a horrible failure for Werder as many considered they were in the easiest group for advancement. Hopes for advancement require a victory over Inter and Panathinaikos to defeat or play Anorthosis Famagusta to a draw.

Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs have a great deal of work to do with the club. To say they are “company men” is an understatement given the decades they have spent with Werder but the club is not playing with respect of “the crest”. Speaking to my coach he explained it best talking of the “treasure” of what Werder “means” as a club and both Thomas Schaaf and Klaus Allofs need to find a way to re-invigorate that pride and restore intensity.

The Green Whites will miss Diego to suspension (unrelated to above) in addition to Hugo Almeida and Naldo to injury along with Frank Baumann being doubtful. The club has upon Daniel Jensen in-hope that his Achilles injury has recovered sufficiently although that would likely be best if he was left till one-hundred percent. Inter Milan has already advanced and given that they are looking to Serie A action, Jose Mourinho expected to give Zlatan Ibrahimovic the evening off.

Thomas Schaaf spoke of the challenge ahead:

“We have to work on one aspect above all, we need to see more activity out there on the pitch. At Karlsruhe, we once again fell into the trap of operating far too passively. I’ve been in the business a long time and we’ve overcome worse than this. But if we’ve learned one thing, it’s that this is not the time to sit back and wait for something to happen. We have to actively work towards bringing everything back together and getting things moving again. And we will be working tirelessly to that end.”

Enjoy the match and comment if you like during it as I will be online.
