Werder Bremen ready to battle in Greece
By: Jackson | October 21st, 2008
First off, I wanted to welcome everyone to Werder Bremen’s new blog that is written by yours truly, Jackson. I want to thank everyone at The Offside and of-course Daryl for giving me to opportunity to write endlessly about my club, goings-on in northern Germany, road-trips and all the dirty secrets of life in the Bundesliga. With that warm and fuzzy introduction complete and its too late to call night and too early to call morning I’m going to get down to business.
The Green-Whites has ventured down to Athens to face Panathinaikos tonight in a critical Champions League match. Presently they sit third in Group B with two draws and a victory would jettison their chances to advance to knockout round. The Athenian club, lead by Henk Ten Cate, were steamrollered in their last Champions League match 3-1 by Cypriot club Anorthosis and are more than aware that without a victory at home, advancing even farther in the tournament is unlikely. However their defensive weaknesses is a massive liability to Thomas Schaaf tactical play with Claudio Pizarro and Diego lighting up the attack.

Last weekend Werder fought to a 3-3 draw against Borussia Dortmund with Claudio Pizarro rescuing a draw with two late goals. Unfortunately they lost their number 1, Tim Wiese who will be replaced by Christian Vander who’ll have the luxury of Die Mannschaft’s Per Mertesacker and Torsten Frings intent on keeping Panathinaikos attack lead by an apparently fit Giorgos Karagounis in-check.
Werder is primed and ready for this match and won’t disappoint.
