Werder - Hertha preview
By: Arian | October 19th, 2007
Derby time… Weserstadion is undoubtedly waiting for this game and will be filled to the last spot. There are more and more recovered players. Tim Borowski, Sanogo and Wiese returned to training this week. And Sebastian Boenisch, Carlos Alberto, Ivan Klasnic, Aaron Hunt and Patrick Owomoyela are still recovering.
The game…
The tradition is on Werder’s side. There are 26 played games (with Werder as the host). Werder won 18, Hertha won 4 and 4 ended as a draw.
The last two games were won by Werder. The first one at Weserstadion with 3:1 and the return leg at Olympiastadion with 1:4.
Hertha isn’t really shining in the last three games. And they’re ninth after nine played games.
Hertha Berlin - Hansa Rostock 1:3
Schalke 04 - Hertha Berlin 1:0
Hertha Berlin - Energie Cottbus 0:0
Our attack probably will consist of Sanogo and Almeida, the two devilish good attackers that arrived this summer.
Tim Borowski recovered so he can play now. The midfield should consist of Diego, Borowski, Jensen and Frings. A stronger midfield than Hertha’s.
And in the back line: Pasanen, Mertesacker, Fritz and Naldo.
So this shouldn’t be a real threat, especially because whenever we play against them at home, we are far much better. So let’s just hope Sanogo doesn’t get too merciful towards the Berliners and fills their net with goals early in the game. If we score first and early we’ll have a massive advantage and I doubt that they’ll be able to recover.
In other news…
- Werder has been interested in signing young Czech striker Martin Fenin from FK Teplice who impressed in the Under 20 World Cup. Also interested in signing him are Arsenal, Liverpool, Espanyol and Lazio, although according to his agent Pavel Zika, no offer was made yet.
- Thomas Schaaf extended his contract till 2010.
- Tim Wiese signed a new contract even though reports were saying that negotiations broke down and that he’s on his way out of Weserstadion.

I wouldn’t call Bremen - Berlin a derby? I hope Bremen wins this one as well. They are slowly getting back to their strongest possible XI, and I hope a strong performance against Berlin will serve as a good warm up for the existential CL match against Lazio.

Why not?
Under “derby” I understand a duel between two strong teams. I know Hertha isn’t shining right now but they DO have a solid team. So we should see an interesting game.
As for the game against Lazio. We definitely need to win this one. If we don’t, we should say goodbye to CL. But Lazio isn’t a team that has consistent form. They draw with Real and three days later they lose 1:5. So you can expect everything from them. And Werder should use that.

Great move resigning Schaaf. That dude’s stare alone probably grabs Bremen 10-12 points per season.

I can say I’m not a big football fan. I barely watch football. But this was an exeptional aricle. It considered all the facts and the statistics and I can freely say that it hit the goal - Werder won the derby match, all the players named here played the match, and of course this was hard match to win. Congratulations Werder, bravo Arian
